Joost “Here Comes Trouble” Wired Article
If you haven’t already done so, be sure to check out the “Here Comes Trouble” article about Joost in the latest Wired magazine or online at their website. Some of the more interesting points include:
- The goal is to render DVD-quality pictures at around 400 Kbps with no sudden freeze-ups or obvious artifacts
- Using conventional servers big enough to hold 40 terabytes of programming which is equivalent toabout 80,000 half-hour TV episodes, compressed for streaming.
- About 80 percent of the project’s software comes from existing libraries of open source code.
- Industry-grade X.509 encryption is built in to prevent piracy
- The road map includes subscriptions and pay-per-view
- Approximatley 90 percent less commercials compared to regular TV, which is projected to be as little as one minute per hour of viewing by focusing on quality rather than quantity
